Our Motif
You may have noticed the emblem on the wax seal of your invitation. We created it to bring together two important parts of our story: a Celtic cross, reflecting Peter’s Welsh heritage, and the Cross of Alcántara, associated with Cáceres and Extremadura, where José grew up.
The circle of the Celtic cross evokes eternity, wholeness and enduring love, while the Cross of Alcántara, with its distinctive floriated, fleur-de-lis-like ends, carries associations of hope, faith, friendship and service. Woven together, they represent two histories, two places of belonging and two lives joined as one.
You will see the motif again on our Order of Service.

José Pizarro
Born and raised on a farm in rural Extremadura, José’s love of food began around the family table and went on to shape a life devoted to Spanish cooking and hospitality. He made London his home and, more recently, became a very proud British citizen. Fondly known as the ‘Godfather of Spanish cooking’ in the UK, he is now one of Britain’s best-known chefs.
Beyond food, José shares Peter’s love of art, nature, travel, friendship and bringing people together.
Sixteen years ago, he met Peter. Then, on 27 May 2017, José proposed in Llerena, in his home region of Extremadura. A civil partnership was planned, but the pandemic interrupted those plans and, as life often does, things moved on.

The Spanish Groom

Dr Peter Meades
Peter grew up in the Welsh valleys and has spent his working life immersed in psychotherapy and the endlessly fascinating business of being human. After 33 years in the NHS, he now works in private practice.
His debut book, I’m Fine (But Not Really), was published by Little, Brown in August 2026. Alongside psychotherapy, Peter has been taking photographs for many years and shares with José a love of art, nature, travel and friendship.
Sixteen years ago, Peter met a rather important Spaniard. Then, on 20 April 2026, he proposed to José on Playa de los Alemanes, the beach in front of their home, Iris, in Zahara de los Atunes. This time, they decided there would be no further postponements and to go full steam ahead with marriage.
